TORONTO – Day two of Argonauts training camp kicked off at 7:15 on Monday morning at York Stadium on York University campus.
Argos head coach Scott Milanovich ensured that the energy was high from the practice’s opening whistle as he had the team’s equipment staff pipe in music on a loud speaker during warm up. Milanovich didn’t break from his strict practice schedule as he had his team hurry into a quick period of individual and special teams drills prior to calling his first team period of the day.
Monday was a new day for the Argonauts, especially for the offence led by interim starter Trevor Harris. Harris and the Argos offence were on point for much of the day. The Argonauts fourth year quarterback started the day off hot, finding rookie receiver Vidal Hazelton over the middle for a long completion. A few plays later Harris hooked up with rookie receiver Kevin Elliot in stride for a touchdown.
Both wideouts have continued to gradually adjust to the Canadian game and have shown early that they can be sure-handed targets when their number is called.
Additional standouts were rookie running backs Lyle McCoombs and Akeem Daniels, as both took advantage of their opportunity to work with the Argonauts first and second teams on Monday, showing the ability to find creases in the defence. The two also impressed spectators with their burst and change of speed.
Upfront veteran offensive lineman Tyler Holmes got after it in team and crossover periods as he single-handedly dominated defenders in the trenches. Second year running back Anthony Coombs had another productive day as the Winnipeg native dipped his hand into all facets of the offence as a ball carrier, pass catcher and kick returner.
2014 CFL Special Teams Player of the Year Swayze Waters continued to work on his punt and kicking mechanics throughout the day. The fourth-year punter started to get a feel for the CFL’s new 32-yard point-after attempt. Waters also put his leg on display punting a number of balls over 65 yards.
The team will take the field again on Tuesday morning for their third day of training camp. To ensure you don’t miss a second of training camp action be sure to follow the Argonauts on Twitter @TorontoArgos, and Snapchat at torontoargos. A full training camp schedule can be found at argonauts.ca.
