TORONTO – For the first time during the Argonauts 2015 Training Camp, the sun was finally shining as the players took the grass field at York University at 7:30 am.
Argos head coach Scott Milanovich had his men dressed in light gear for the team’s first session, focusing heavily on x’s and o’s. The Argonauts opened practice with an extended walk-through period before jumping into the first team session of the day.
When the team broke into their first team period, the level of intensity was high but was even in terms of competition. The Argonauts offence was determined to get the upper hand on the day as the receivers dominated their crossover period with the defensive backs.
Assistant defensive backs coach DJ Wingate was once again full of energy, finding new ways to celebrate defensive stops throughout the day. Spectators could catch him giving his backs energetic high-fives after tight coverage, or high-stepping up and down the sideline every time his group came up with a turnover.
The practice finished with some punt team work, as kickers Andrew Muzljakovich and Swayze Waters took turns booting it downfield to the eager arms of return men. While they were busy kicking, SB Chad Owens decided to end the practice by leading the receivers group in some fun and games, including a game called “flip” where a drop or a touch of the ball with anything other than a single hand led to an elimination. By the time practice ended, the circle contained only Owens, QB Logan Kilgore, and WR Kenny Shaw.
Overall, the players were satisfied with their efforts on the day, and many expressed that practicing on grass was a relief on the body, especially their legs.
The Argonauts will take the afternoon to get treatment on any ailing injuries or muscles as well as spend time in positional and team meetings this evening, before an off-day, including yoga.
