Training Camp Diary: Day 13

Argonauts.ca staff

TORONTO – Thursday’s weather forecast was a familiar one for the Argonauts, as rain once again soaked the grounds at York University.

Because of the poor weather, Toronto moved their opening walk-through period – which is usually held at York Stadium – into one of the school’s gymnasiums, keeping players and coaches dry and focused on the task at hand.

Following a brief break, the Argos took to York Stadium during a respite in the downpour, and were lucky to find two hours of dry weather to practice.

The highlight of Friday’s session was the one-on-one matchups, which pitted receivers and running backs against linebackers and defensive backs. Defensive back Travis Hawkins was responsible for the first big play, turning tight coverage of running back Anthony Coombs into an interception, firing up his defensive teammates and coaches. AJ Jefferson also continued to impress, sticking to his receivers like glue at every opportunity.

Receivers Tori Gurley and Vidal Hazelton led the offensive contingent, making turnstiles out of their defensive opposition and finding the end zone multiple times each during the session.

Argos hopefuls will get a break on Saturday, with a yoga session the only on-field activity scheduled. The team will then return to the practice field on Sunday – the first cut-down day –  to prepare for their final pre-season matchup in Montreal against the Alouettes on Thursday.
