Training Camp Diary: Day 16

Argonauts.ca staff

TORONTO – The Argonauts took the field Monday for the second of three practices ahead of their second pre-season game in Montreal. It was a hot and humid morning at York, with a thick layer of fog shrouding the turf field at York Stadium.

After a brief team walkthrough, the Argos moved into positional drills before spending the final hour of practice on team period and ‘skelly’ session, which pits the offensive playmakers against linebackers and defensive backs on defence, with no linemen on either side.

The team session worked out in the defence’s favour, with several ‘sacks’ and an interception by national safety Jermaine Gabriel, who has had a strong camp and appears to have seized the starting safety position.

The skelly period told a different story however, with the offence dominating the red zone. WRs Vidal Hazelton and Kevin Elliott both caught touchdowns from QB Trevor Harris with the first team, while a busted coverage resulted in QB Mitchell Gale finding WR Kenny Shaw wide open for the score. Following the period, LB Brandon Isaac partook in some light-hearted ribbing of the playmakers, challenging them to score touchdowns when the linemen were on the field.

As has been the norm following practice, players were treated to ice cream from the training staff, although the receivers and running backs were denied their treats after too many offsides during the session.
