TORONTO — Justin Medlock is leaving his girlfriend holding the bag.
After losing the kicker’s battle to Eddie Johnson during the Toronto Argonauts training camp, Medlock figured he’d be free to serve as the caddy for his girlfriend, Hannah Jun, at the LPGA Tour’s U.S. Open.
Those plans appear to have gone up in smoke with Johnson suffering a separated shoulder making a tackle on a kickoff in Toronto’s 30-17 win over Hamilton on Wednesday. After a brief absence, Johnson returned to finish the game but really couldn’t help in special-teams coverage due to his injury.
In fact, he even resorted to making a TD-saving trip of Hamilton’s Marquay McDaniel on a 49-yard punt return in the second quarter that forced Hamilton to settle for a field goal that cut Toronto’s lead to 20-10.
But Medlock is expected to handle the punting and kicking chores Saturday when the Argos host the Saskatchewan Roughriders in their home opener (1 p.m. ET).
“I’m glad I’m here,” Medlock said. “I’d rather be doing this than holding her bag getting yelled at.”
