TORONTO – Many outside the Calgary Stampeders locker room had concluded that this would have been the year when the typical West powerhouse took a step back. Very few would have predicted that the red and white would be one of only two teams to enter Week 3 with a 2-0 record. They now prep to take on Toronto in the Double Blue’s home opener this Wednesday night.
Stamps running back Joffrey Reynolds averaged 6.8 yards per carry in the season opener against the Boatmen, romping for 117 yards and a touchdown.
They were far from dominant in both of their victories, and an argument could be made that had a few plays here or there gone the opposite way, their record would have been reversed. The reality is, however, this team just seems to make big plays when they have to. Regardless of how the rest of the game transpired.
Saturday against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, QB Henry Burris executed an impressive final drive. With the help of undisciplined play by Hamilton’s Jamall Johnson, the Stamps were able to set up a chip-shot field goal attempt for rookie kicker Rob Maver – which he made no mistake on.
Not unlike Saturday’s contest, Week one’s matchup with the Argos was also up for the taking, until the Stamps pulled ahead when it mattered. They capitalized on costly Argos turnovers and cemented the game on Toronto’s last drive by forcing a Cleo Lemon fumble resulting in a 41-yard touchdown.
This week, the Stamps will look to play a more complete game, and there is no doubt that they will try and serve up the Argos defence a large helping of Joffrey Reynolds. The veteran back averaged 6.8 yards per carry in the season opener against the Boatmen, romping for 117 yards and a touchdown. Another solid outing against the Ticats on Saturday saw him fall two yards shy of the century mark as he was masterful at extending drives and chasing down first down territory.
Reynolds and the Stamps will make their only visit to Toronto this Wednesday at Rogers Centre (kickoff at 7:30 p.m. ET). For tickets, please call 416-341-ARGO (2746) or click here to purchase online.
