Head 2 Head: Argos/ticats

ARGONAUTS.CA STAFF

TORONTO – Each week, argonauts.ca showcases one of the marquee matchups for fans to watch out for before the Argos’ next game. This week, we take a slightly different approach as we break down the teams by position.

Hamilton Quarterback  Toronto Quarterback
His peers picked him as the ‘most underrated’ in a recent TSN poll, and rightfully so.  Kevin Glenn finished the season with a passer efficiency rating of 97.6% and was two yards shy of having three 1000-yard receivers for the second time in his career.

It has been a rollercoaster season for CFL rookie Cleo Lemon.  The learning curve has been steep and the challenges have been evident but the simple fact that he has led his team to a playoff berth proves that perhaps head coach Jim Barker’s patience is merited.
Hamilton Running Backs

After a tough start to the year, many thought De’Andra Cobb was the next to suffer from the ‘sophomore jinks’.  The second half of the season saw him bounce back to finish with a more than respectable 227 carries for 1,173 yards and 8 touchdowns.

There is not much more that can be written about Cory Boyd.  The Argos’ nominee for most outstanding player has been nothing short of spectacular, finishing second in rushing with 226 carries for 1,359 yards and 6 touchdowns.
Hamilton Receivers  Toronto Receivers
Chris Bauman has come through in recent weeks to provide Canadian depth behind Dave Stala. Stala helps to round out one of the league’s most dynamic receiving corps.

A group of receivers that are still trying to find the right blend of personnel but has an intangible in Jeremaine Copeland who’s veteran leadership is priceless heading into the playoffs.
Hamilton Offensive Line
 Toronto Offensive Line
After struggling in the first third of the year, the Ticats’ first line of protection for Glenn has really come together with the mid-season return of Jason Jimenez.

Hit midway through the year with injuries, the Argos’ offensive line, led by Rob Murphy has struggled against Hamilton’s d-line this season but has proven that it can push downfield, when running the ball, with the best of them.
Hamilton Defensive Line

The Ticats’ pass rushers are the perfect case of the ‘rich getting richer’ with the acquisition of DE Stevie Baggs.  Baggs has transformed the unit into one of the most ferocious in the country.

The Argos could boast football’s largest rotation of defensive linemen with the possibility of dressing seven on Sunday.  The addition of Ricky Foley and return of Adriano Belli allows for fresh bodies at all times.
Hamilton Linebackers  Toronto Linebackers
Otis Floyd leads a group of former B.C. Lions that prides themselves on being physical and attacking the quarterback on the blitz.

A versatile group of defenders that can overwhelm opposing offensive lines when they send pressure but can also drop back into coverage at any moment.
Hamilton Secondary  Toronto Secondary
It has taken the Ticats 18 weeks to try and find the group of halfbacks and corners that they feel best suit their defence – injuries have done little to help the process.

A ball-hawking group that often jumps errant passes thrown their way.  The calming force of Willie Pile keeps the other defenders in check.
Hamilton Special Teams

The year started with stud returner Marcus Thigpen and has only improved with the addition of punter Eric Wilbur who sends towering kicks down field.

Complete with trick plays, a dynamic returner and a savvy kicker, the Argos’ special teams are once again the envy of the Canadian Football League. This unit will suffer without league-leading tackler Bryan Crawford who will miss his second-straight game with an injury
