By The Numbers: Jim Barker

ARGONAUTS.CA STAFF

Last week, Argos head coach Jim Barker was named one of three finalists for 2010 CFL Coach of the Year, becoming the first finalist for this award since Michael ‘Pinball’ Clemons was nominated in six consecutive seasons from 2002-07.

After a season that saw Barker turn the Argonauts from bottom of their division in 2008 and 2009 to contenders in 2010, argonauts.ca takes a look at some of the more intriguing team stats that Barker helped spearhead in the latest edition of By The Numbers.

138 Following a penalty-filled 2009 campaign Barker’s bunch was the CFL’s most disciplined group last season, totalling only 138 penalties.

77 The Argos took 77 fewer penalties in 2010 than they did in 2009.

8 In what was viewed by many as a ‘transformation year’, the Boatmen made the playoffs despite playing eight first-year starters on their depth chart.

9 wins by coach Barker’s squad in the regular season, two more than the previous two seasons combined.

7 By season’s end Barker’s boys boasted seven East Division All-Stars

4 of the division all-stars were named CFL All-Stars after being shut out the year prior.

7.6 The vaunted Argos defence held opponents to an average of only 7.6 yards per pass completion – only 0.1 behind league-leading Winnipeg.

547 The Argos accumulated 547 more net yards in 2010 than the year previous.

3,015 The Argonauts’ special teams unit accumulated a total of 3,015 yards off kickoff and punt returns.  The total was 716 yards more than total kickoff and punt return yards surrendered.
