Training Camp Tune-up

ARGONAUTS.CA STAFF

TORONTO – Argos General Manager and Head Coach Jim Barker and his staff are not waiting until June’s training camp to begin evaluating their 2011 squad.

The Argonauts football staff are in Paisley, Florida, this week as they host an off-season workout and free agent camp which runs until Thursday.

Traditionally used as an opportunity to get a good look at possible free agent recruits, this camp will also allow Barker and his staff to begin looking at some players already under contract. A select few have been invited to get an early chance to show how their off-season training has been progressing.

“It does a couple things,” Barker told argonauts.ca on Tuesday.  “One is, we can give [the free agents] an idea of what it is going to take to make our team and they will have an idea as to what we do offensively and defensively – we get a chance to evaluate not only their skills but their ability to learn.”

Perhaps the biggest story regarding the veterans at this workout is the battle to become the number one pivot. With all five quarterbacks attending this week’s camp, a few could possibly gain a small edge in the coaches’ books heading into training camp should they perform well this week.

“It’s a constant evaluation process and how they perform here is going to be important in terms of getting them on the right foot heading into training camp,” Barker said of the quarterbacks.
