ARGONAUTS.CA STAFF

YORK UNIVERSITY – Day two of rookie camp featured a bit more sun and a few less jitters as the rookies took the field at York University for day two.  After a very up-tempo first practice, the team picked up right where they left off.

Toronto Argonauts Off-Season Timeline

Players began taking the field 20 minutes before practice even started, with DL PaiPai Falemalu first one out for the second day in a row.  The rookie defensive linemen showcased his quickness during one-on-one drills, getting a chance to rush the QB and succeeding on multiple occasions.

On the other side of the trenches, 2013 CFL Canadian Draft picks, offensive linemen Jas Dhillon  and Kirby Fletcher each had their chances to protect Jazz Lindsey, the Guelph Gryphon QB who is attending camp as a CIS QB roster exception.  Both showed strength and quick feet during each of their one-on-one opportunities.

QB Mitchell Gale showed off his pinpoint accuracy and strong arm, hitting multiple receivers with the long bomb during one-on-one and skelly portions.  One of his prime targets was WR JD Falslev whodespite being one of the smaller guys on the field at 5’8”, made himself look quite big, as he leaped over DBs to make catches that guys his size wouldn’t even dream of.

Another player to make an impression today was DB Eric Black who went up and made a few big plays on D.  First in one-on-ones stripping a catch at the last moment and second during skelly when he made a diving play to tip a ball from a receivers grasp.

Highlight Plays

The defense did it again today, but this time it was DB Kent Richardson who impressed defensive coordinator Tim Burke.  Richardson made quite the interception during one-on-ones that involved a combination of precise timing and closing speed.

Special Teams were also a focus in todays practice, and it was led by rookie kicker Josh Jasper.  Jasper was making 37-yard field goals look easy, clearing them out of the end zone and down the middle almost every time.
