Training Camp Blog – Day 2

YORK UNIVERSITY – As expected, tempo was the name of the game on Day 2 of 2014 Argos training camp, as Scott Milanovich and his coaching staff continuously pushed the envelope ensuring the players get used to their high-energy expectations.

Once the offence and the defence lined up against one another in the first component of team drills, the offence was executing as though it was the middle of the season. Crisp routes, great blocking and pinpoint accuracy by Ricky Ray had the defence on its heels.

With that being said, the defence took the one-on-one’s to exact their revenge. QBs were routinely forced to tuck the ball and run because defensive backs and linebackers were right in the back pockets of all the receivers. WRs Robert Gill and Terrell Sinkfield were two players that made a splash in the drills, making spectacular catches with defenders draped all over them.

The conversation in the backfield continued to be popular, with all of the QBs showing great poise with the ball and each running back finding holes and catching balls efficiently out of the backfield.

Speaking of the backfield, Scott Milanovich provided an update based on what he has seen in the past two days. Watch it here.

Day 2 of training camp was also time for some of the coaches to shine. Firstly, new Defensive Line coach Will Plemons utilized the agile bags as landing pads for his players. The drill consisted of D-Lineman lining up in a 3-point stance, and then launching themselves into the bags.

Next, it was new Special Teams Coordinator Jim Daley’s turn to take the spotlight. In a kickoff drill that nobody on the sidelines had ever seen, Daley used some interesting tactics to help his players learn the subtle-and not so subtle-nuances of special teams in the CFL.

The best part of the day came from the return of the Argos beloved Equipment Assistant, “Dave The Wave”. During the team stretch period, Wave took the opportunity to do his patented sprint from one end of the field to the other. The players loved it, and it got the day off to a roaring start.
