Argos To Host First Captains’ Club Day For Local High School Football Players

Argonauts.ca Staff

Toronto – 2014 will mark the fifth year of the Toronto Argonauts’ Level the Playing Field Program, presented by Tim Hortons, which has already returned or established football teams in more than 10 GTA high schools while identifying and funding projects to make the sport of football safer for our youth.  Tuesday, September 30 marks the program’s latest evolution when the first-ever Captains’ Club Day will be hosted at the Argonauts’ new practice facility at Downsview Park.

The Argos have called upon high schools from across the GTA and more than 100 football team captains, and their coaches, are expected to be part of this special event. During the afternoon, youth football players will watch the Argonauts practice then learn leadership strategies from current Argos players, alumni, and staff, discuss concussion and injury awareness, and discover gender-based violence prevention tactics.

Commented Toronto Argonauts Director, Education & Community Programs, Jason Colero, “We are very proud of what has been accomplished through our Level Playing Field Program in such a short time. Alongside our partner, Tim Hortons, we have inspired more than 700 youth to join football teams and reap the many positive benefits associated with playing the sport, worked to make the game safer by introducing helmet certification programming, provided athletic therapists at games, and offered instructional clinics for coaches and players. Through Captains’ Club Day we will expand upon that work to cultivate the leadership traits these youth have already demonstrated among their teammates on the field and show them how they can use those traits to be good citizens off of the field.”
