A native of Toronto, Ontario, Black has spent his entire six year CFL career as a member of the Toronto Argonauts. Selected in the sixth round (45th overall) of the 2008 CFL Draft, Black has played 74 games in Double Blue totalling 66 special teams tackles, 64 defensive tackles, three (3) forced fumbles, two (2) interceptions, and has recorded touchdowns by fumble return, interception and punt return. Black was a member of the 100th Grey Cup Championship team and has been an active member of the club’s award winning community programs throughout his tenure.
Commented Matt Black, “I would like to thank Jim Barker and Coach Milanovich for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to continue my career as an Argo. I’d also like to thank the entire coaching staff for their support during this season. As a child, I had a dream to play professional football. To be able to do so in my hometown, in front of our amazing fans, my family, and my friends is truly a blessing. Finally, I would like to thank my family for believing in me, loving me and supporting me. You have all had a hand in my success and for this I am truly grateful.”
Prior to joining the Argonauts, Black was a four-year starter at Saginaw Valley State (2004-08) where he was named First-Team All-GLIAC and was selected to the Valero Cactus Bowl Senior All-Star game in his final year. He played high school ball at Northern Secondary School while growing up in Toronto and was recently joined on the Double Blue by his brother, Eric, making them one of the few brother pairings to have played on the same CFL team together.
Matt Black is the second player from the G.T.A. to extend his contract this week. LB James Yurichuk, from Brampton, Ontario, extended with the Double Blue through 2016 on Thursday.
