TORONTO – Today the Toronto Argonauts express their condolences for the loss of former Argos General Manager and Head Coach Tommy Hudspeth, who passed away after a battle with cancer at the age of 83 yesterday.
The Tulsa, OK native had a career in football which spanned three decades, including coaching and management positions in leagues from the high-school level all the way up to the CFL and NFL.
After beginning his coaching career as an assistant at Norman High School, Hudspeth served for two years in the U.S. military before returning to coaching after his deployment. Hudspeth first worked in the CFL in 1961 when he served as an assistant for two seasons with the Calgary Stampeders.
Folloowing head coaching stops at Brigham Young University and the University of Texas at El Paso, Hudspeth spent two seasons as the head coach of the Detroit Lions, before he was hired to be the GM of the Argonauts in 1979. After a poor start to the 1981 season, Hudspeth took the reins as head coach of the Argos as well as his GM duties, finishing the final six games of the season with a 2-4 record.
Thoughts are with Tommy’s wife, Ruth Ann, and his three children during this time.
