Toronto – The 2014 CFL season was one to remember for fans of the Toronto – Hamilton rivalry, with the Argos’ edging the Tiger-Cats two wins to one in the season series. Although all three games unfolded in their own unique way, each was a battle down to the very end, as each game was decided by two points or less.
The two teams wouldn’t face off in 2014 until week 10 and the Labour Day Classic, which was appropriately the first game ever played at Hamilton’s Tim Hortons Field. The game would prove to be a war of attrition and a defensive battle, with the two teams combining for just 25 points.
Ricky Ray was stymied by the Ticats’ defence, held to 142 passing yards with no touchdowns while facing off for the first time against his former protégé Zach Collaros, who made his return to the Tiger-Cats line-up after suffering an early-season injury. Ray and Collaros traded touchdowns in the first half, but stout defences in the second half resulted in only two points scored between the two teams, and the Argos’ comeback fell a point short.
Though the loss wasn’t the desired result for the Argonauts, a tremendous personal milestone was achieved in the game. An early fourth quarter completion from Ricky Ray to Jason Barnes brought Ray’s career passing yardage total past the 50,000 yard mark, as he joined some elite company as one of only six CFL quarterbacks to achieve the milestone.
