TORONTO – The Toronto Argonauts officially unveiled their plans today to stoke the flames of the historic Toronto – Hamilton rivalry, by painting an iconic piece of Tiger-Cats fan art Double Blue ahead of the Labour Day Rematch.
On Friday, September 11, the Ticats car will be on display inside the Argos’ Pre-Game Tailgate Party (starting at 5:00 p.m. ET outside Gate 11) prior to the Labour Day Rematch. For $5, fans will get the chance to paint the car Double Blue in an effort to cover up Tiger-Cats decals, colours and signatures. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Canadian Safe Schools Network, a collaborative partner of the Argos’ Huddle Up Bullying Prevention Program, presented by Tim Hortons.
“This event will give Argos fans an opportunity to contribute to a great cause while showing their Double Blue pride and honouring one of the oldest rivalries in professional sports,” said Toronto Argonauts Sr. Vice President, Business Operations, David Bedford. “We are thankful that Mr. Cabral worked with us to make this possible, and we hope that our fans are as excited as we are to start painting!”
Tiger-Cats fan Terry Cabral has spent the last four years collecting signatures of Ticats players and coaches on the vehicle, which has been turned into a mobile shrine to the Black and Gold. Cabral adorned the car with a Tiger-Cats logo on the hood, along with black and gold racing stripes, a miniature CFL field on the trunk, and Hamilton’s famous “Eat ‘em Raw” slogan.
Cabral posted the car for sale on Kijiji in order to raise funds for the Bob Kemp Hospice in Hamilton, and the Argonauts agreed to purchase the car for a donation. Argos fans will now be invited to paint the car during the team’s Pre-game Tailgate on September 11, and following the event a local charity will tow it away for further use.
The Argonauts head to Hamilton for the Labour Day Classic this Monday, September 7 at 1:00 p.m. The Argos then return home for the Labour Day Rematch on Friday, September 11 when they host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Rogers Centre.
