TORONTO – The Canadian Football League (CFL) announced today that four Toronto Argonauts were named to the East Division All-Star team: RB Brandon Whitaker, OG Greg Van Roten, DT Cleyon Laing and LB Greg Jones. Three of Toronto’s four all-star selections were first time recipients.
Brandon Whitaker, who originally signed with the Argonauts following training camp on June 21, started 15 games with the Boatmen this season. The seven-year CFL veteran finished the regular season ranked second in the East Division in rushing with 121 carries for 636 yards and three touchdowns while adding 53 receptions for 440 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns. Whitaker’s 2015 East Division All-Star selection marks just his second division honour of his career. He was previously named a Divisional All-Star and CFL All-Star in 2011 with the Montreal Alouettes.
Greg Van Roten, the Argonauts’ Most Outstanding Lineman,has been the anchor of the Argonauts offensive line this season. As a first-year CFL player, he has started 17 games and showcased his versatility by starting games at Centre, Guard and Tackle for the Double Blue. His line helped QB Trevor Harris achieve a number of career, team and CFL milestones as a first-year starter.
Linebacker Greg Jones was a sure-handed tackler for the Argonauts on both defence and special teams throughout the regular season. The Michigan State product led the Boatman and finished the season ranked fifth in the CFL with 98 defensive tackles while also leading the team in special teams tackles with 17. Jones, who was named the Argonauts defensive captain and Most Outstanding Defensive Player last week, registered 5+ tackles in 12 of the Argos 18 regular season games and his 98 tackles were the most tackles recorded by an Argonauts player since Robert McCune amassed 99 tackles in 2013.
The 2015 season was a career-year for Argonauts’ 2015 Most Outstanding Canadian, Cleyon Laing. In 17 starts at defensive tackle, Laing posted career numbers in every defensive category. He registered 40 defensive tackles – nine more tackles than he’s posted in the last two seasons combined (31), eight (8) quarterback sacks (second-most on the club), and two (2) forced fumbles.
The East Division All-Stars were selected by the voting members of the FRC from the East Division markets, the National Chapter and the East Division head coaches. The West Division All-Stars were selected by the voting members of the FRC from the West Division markets, the National Chapter and the West Division head coaches. The CFL All-Stars will be announced later this year.
