DS Orlondo Steinauer

– The Toronto Argonauts Football Club has ensured that one of the CFL’s
toughest secondary’s will remain intact by signing all-star DS Orlondo Steinauer, all-star DB Kenny Wheaton and DB Wayne Shaw to contract extensions through 2009.
Toronto Argonauts Head Coach Rich Stubler
commented, “It is great to welcome back three stellar members of our
secondary. In doing so, we have secured two all-stars who can really
bolster our defensive secondary in Orlondo and Kenny, and a Canadian
corner who has been a proven starter in this league in Wayne Shaw.”
A
premiere safety in the CFL and a team captain on defence, Steinauer has
been the leader of the Argos’ ball-hawking secondary since joining the
club in 2001. A four-time CFL All-Star and six-time East Division
All-Star, Steinauer is coming off another tremendous season in 2007.
In addition to recording a career-high 184 interception return yards on
7 picks, the Western Washington product moved into 3rd place
on the Argos’ All-Time Interception Return Yards list, 697 (trailing
only CB Adrion Smith, 750, and CB Reggie Pleasant, 781), and was also a
final nominee for the All-Time Argos position chart.

Steinauer, “It is always important to enjoy going to work every day. On
top of being unbelievable athletes, the corps group of players that
surround me make coming to work an enjoyable experience. At the end of
the day, however, my goal has not changed over my career – I am playing
for a chance to win another Grey Cup.”

DB Kenny Wheaton
|
One
of the most feared defensive backs in the CFL, Wheaton has a knack for
punishing opposing players in the open field. He is coming off a
productive 2007 campaign which saw him earn his first career CFL
All-Star and third career East Division All-Star vote. In his five
seasons with the Argos, he has accumulated 358 DT, 5 QB sacks, 20 KD
and 11 INT for 229 return yards and 1 TD in 82 career games. Wheaton
began his career with the Boatmen in 2003 after spending three seasons
with the Dallas Cowboys (NFL) and splitting time with the Detroit Fury
and Colorado Crush of the AFL. The former Oregon Ducks standout was
originally drafted by the Cowboys in the 3rd round (94th overall) in the 1997 NFL Draft.
A
Toronto native, Shaw joined the Argonauts in Week 4 of last season
after starting in the secondary of both the Hamilton Tiger-Cats
(2004-2007) and the Montreal Alouettes (2002-2003). Shaw instantly
ignited the Argos’ special teams, recording 10 tackles. Shaw began his
CFL career with the Boatmen after being drafted in the 2nd round (13th
overall) in the 1999 CFL Canadian Draft. In 2001, he racked up 40 DT,
3 ST, 9 KD and 6 interceptions for 2 touchdowns en route to being named
both a CFL and East Division All-Star.
