The Argos practiced as
a team for the first time today. The tempo was up beat and the players
were enthusiastic to be on the field. Fans packed the sidelines to
catch a glimpse of the 2008 squad, many made an afternoon out of it,
unfolding lawn chairs and packing lunches.
Star receiver Arland Bruce III set the pace early when he jetted over the middle and leaped high into the air to pull down a Kerry Joseph pass – in triple coverage. Cornerback Khalil Carter,
who appears to be the front runner for the open corner position, made a
big interception which he legged most of the field. Veteran linebacker Mike O’Shea made a point of welcoming Alumni President and former Argo Peter Martin. Martin attended several Argos training camps as a player and says that he still dreams about preparing to take the field.
Jonathan Brown got a chuckle out of the fans when he burst through the line and shoe-tackled new running back Tyler Ebell.
Brown quickly jumped to his feet, sheepishly looked over at his head
coach and offered a heart felt, “sorry coach Stubs.” Stubler simply
waived, smiled and the drill continued.
DB Chuck Winters had a strong first day, causing headaches for the offence by knocking balls away and making good mental plays.
RB Dominique Dorsey demonstrated his explosiveness by burning through the line then taking
off 55-yards untouched for the endzone. Dorsey is expected to see his
fair share of reps at running back this camp.
Arland Bruce talked about being on the field for the first time, “Everyone spends
the off-season doing what they can to prepare for the season and its
easy to take for granted your position on the team. This camp I really
feel like a rookie. We have four hungry quarterbacks and a wide-open
offence that gives everyone a chance to be the go-to-guy at any given
moment. We’ve got a lot of talent this year and I’m doing what I can to
learn the new plays, be consistent, and make sure we win.”
NOTES:
Andre Talbot made his 2008 debut wearing the familiar #9 jersey – the same number he wore in part of 2001 and 2002 before handed it over to Damon Allen in 2003 and changed to #4. With the arrival of Mike Vanderjagt, who will wear #13, RB Andre Durie has changed back to his training camp number from 2007, #44.
The Argonauts announced that import LB Greg Cole, Kansas, has been released and also announced that import WR David Boston, Ohio State, import DT Michael Quarshie, Columbia, and non-import OL Richard Zulys, Western Ontario, have been placed on the suspended list.
Monday will be the team’s first two-a-day practice, with the first at 9:00 a.m. and the second at 3:00 p.m.
