Still relatively
fresh, the Argos had their first of what will be many two-a-day
practices. Both practices were intense. First team offence and defence
were penciled in and had their first opportunity to play together.
Veteran LB #35 Kevin Eiben had a strong afternoon practice picking off two passes. Rookie CB #37 Antonio Perkins also had an interception on a short out.
New receiver #83 Bethel Johnson showed some of his world-class speed on missed field goal returns,
leisurely slipping into another gear as he found holes in the coverage.
The offensive line, which is now headed by the revered Bill MacDermott,
has shown some rust while learning each other’s tendencies but appeared
to be coming together. The retirement of left tackle Mike Pearson
opened up a spot that appears to have been filled by returning veteran
#59 Jerome Davis. Rookie lineman #61 Ross Weaver spent most of the day anchoring the right tackle spot and demonstrated good feet and hands.
Rookie lineman, and 2008 CFL draft pick, #53 Mark Dewit showed signs of improvement as he started to incorporate the advice, techniques, and tricks of ‘Coach Mac’ to stop the d-line.
Second-year running back #44 Andre Durie ran hard all day and saw significant time in the backfield along with #24 Tyler Ebell.
Michael Fletcher offered his insight after morning practice, “I’m trying to get my body
and mind back into the game. In terms of body, it is one thing to
workout in the gym and something completely different actually get on
the field.
As far as my mind
goes, the defence is changing with a new defensive coordinator (Kavis
Reed) so we’re getting use to the playbook. Everything is different
this year – we even have a new head coach. It’s been a matter of coming
in with an open mind and taking an open-book approach.”
NOTES
The Folk family
visited the morning practice. Chad’s wife, Susan, and his mom and dad
who just flew in from B.C., brought the new twins Nathan and Julia.
Everyone agreed that Nathan is the spitting image of dad.
The Argos released OL Ulish Booker, DL Dallas Flynn, LB Raymond Lamb III, WR Matt Miller following morning practice.
Players will be back on the field Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
