High V, Low V, T, Broken T – it was the first day of practice and I was so nervous as I tried to nail every move the captains showed us. The next morning, I could barely lift a glass of juice to my lips. My neck, shoulders and back were sore from the precise arm movements we had practiced the night before. I had been so anxious, yet excited, to have my first practice as an Argos Cheerleader. To my surprise, the other girls were very friendly and outgoing. I knew I was going to love every minute being on the team.
A few weeks into things, we had Cheerleader Boot Camp. Thirty-three girls at a hotel for a weekend of fun, team-building and information sessions – sorry, no pillow fights! It was definitely a weekend to remember. We got to know each other on a more personal level including each other’s quirky sides. One girl loves milk and if she isn’t drinking it, she is craving it. Another knows every line from the movie “Clueless”, and will proudly quote it at any time if asked. Everything from the rookie show to the Toronto Rock Lacrosse game made the weekend a blast.
At Boot Camp, Chuck Winters, the Argos Defensive Back, said to us “the strength of the pack is the wolf, and the strength of the wolf is the pack.” This could not be truer for our team. One of the most important qualities a cheerleader must possess is dedication. We practice as a team two nights a week and are also required to do so on our own. It is truly dynamic how well we work together in practice, on the field, at promotions or just hanging out. We have developed a close bond with each other. I guess you could say it is our cheerleading sisterhood.
The beauty of the Argos Cheerleaders is that it is made up of a diverse group of talented women. We have all learned something from each other and continue to do so everyday. Another thing that is certain, there is never a shortage of laughter when the cheerleaders get together.
