The Toronto Argonauts Football Club has signed DB David Lofton, son of Pro-Football Hall of Fame receiver James Lofton, to a practice roster agreement.
Lofton played five seasons at Stanford where he began as a quarterback, transitioned to receiver and finally moved to defensive back. Rated one of the top prep athletes in the U.S. out of high school, Lofton was recruited as a quarterback but his coaches decided to convert the lanky athlete to receiver where he saw spot duty in his second season. In his sophomore year, he moved to safety where he developed his defensive skills and dressed in 19 games, making 10 starts, over his final two seasons. Lofton attended training camp with the Miami Dolphins (NFL) and played four games with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2007.
Lofton’s father, James, is one of the greatest NFL receivers to ever play having been inducted into the Pro-Football Hall of Fame in 2003. He played 16 NFL seasons (1978-93) with the Green Bay Packers, Los Angeles Raiders, Buffalo Bills and Philadelphia Eagles and caught 764 passes for 14,004 yards and 75 touchdowns. The elder Lofton also attended Stanford from 1974 to 1977 where he was a First-Team All-Conference selection and still holds several Cardinal receiving records.
In other news, the Toronto Argonauts have released import LB Matt Hewitt and import LB Timothy Strickland from the practice roster.
