The Toronto Argonauts Football Club is thrilled to welcome back former CFL Outstanding Special Teams player WR/KR Keith Stokes and OT Clifton ‘Cliff’ Washburn. Both Stokes and Washburn originally joined the club in 2006 and have been added to the practice roster. Stokes played in 14 regular season games for the Boatmen while Washburn started six games at left and right tackle including the 2006 East Final in Montreal.
A seven-year CFL veteran, Stokes is one of the most accomplished returners to play in the CFL. He was named the league’s Most Outstanding Special Teams Player in 2004, as well as a divisional and CFL All-Star. Stokes signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers last season and dressed in two regular season games before leaving a lasting impression with Argos fans at the East Final. The shifty returner darted 81 yards for a punt return touchdown and catapulted his team into the Grey Cup championship game against Saskatchewan.
Washburn first joined organized football during his senior year at Citadel College in South Carolina. An accomplished athlete, he played four years as the starting centre for the Citadel Bulldogs basketball team racking up more than 1,200 points in 102 games. Following college, he signed with the NFL’s New York Giants as a free agent and recently attended training camp with Houston Texans.
