Argo Fan Family Revival

By Simone White

I’m not just an Argos fan, I’m an Argos family member despite their defeat on Friday, August 15.  Symbolically speaking, supporters in attendance unofficially changed their last names to Argonaut and stayed the course through the rough waters that the Boatmen could not weather that night. Unfortunately, “Hurricane Alouettes” had its way and washed the Argos away to a 32-14 loss and they now stand at 3 and 5 in the East.

Yet, the fans seem to know what the Argos knows best. Family does not turn their backs on each other; family turns out to support one another.  Toronto cannot underestimate the Argonauts’ ability to entertain the avid sports follower or sports illiterate because the overall game day experience is something to be enjoyed by everyone.  This spiritual bond has been present throughout the years as Toronto is the CFL’s most winning team with 15 Grey Cups and the fans still remain confident that despite the recent ailments in the Argonauts’ offence, eventually they will overcome.

We also know that family should not be hypercritical of each other.  When the stadium announcer requested the fans to make some noise, they responded with a “boooooo”. We know that family has to be honest with each other. It’s in the Argos best interest that Toronto respects them enough to tell their team the truth in their own house although a nicer way would be just to chant “Defense”!

It’s a happy family reunion and the crowd remains raucous and excited. Everyone is there, even those that you could do without seeing again for a while like your obnoxiously manic fanatic nephew who can’t seem to sit still. He just has to run all over stadium screaming at the top of his lungs until his face is almost as red as his hair.  Then there is your drunken uncle Bud who hasn’t gotten any wiser since his 4th 40 ounce. Both of these guys don’t seem to really know what the heck is going on in the game but they are there, they are entertaining and ironically they are family. Grandma Rose seemed to make it out and her baby blue coiffure and blends right into the sea of Argo colour in the stands. Don’t forget your “beg for a T-Shirt” cousin. He stares at the scoreboard, otherwise disengaged but suddenly comes alive at the sight of some Argos cheerleaders with contest giveaways.  Credence Clearwater Revival and Sean Paul blare out of the speakers between plays and all the generations of Argonauts celebrate another game and time spent with each other, to banter about a miscue or questionable call. Toronto shakes it off, turns out and stays out late until the clock says 0:00.  I’m Baby Sista Argonaut.
