Montreal – Toronto Argonauts’ quarterback Kerry Joseph was awarded the Gord Barwell Award at the 30th Annual Athletes in Action Grey Cup Breakfast, held Saturday, November 22 at the Hilton Montreal Bonaventure. Joseph addressed the crowd of over 900 and said he was honoured to accept the award.
The award is named after the legendary receiver, the late Gord Barwell of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, who helped establish the ministry of Athletes in Action throughout the CFL. AIA continues to provide a spiritual chaplain to each of the CFL team. The Gord Barwell is presented to a CFL player each year who exhibits exemplary Christian conduct and leadership on and off the field. Each chaplain has the opportunity to nominate a player from his respective team for the award.
Other CFL players who are former winners include: Anthony Calvillo, Milt Stegall, Danny Barrett, Mike “Pinball” Clemons, Greg Frers, Joe Montford and Tracy Ham. Kerry Joseph joined some of the CFL’s top players and coaches at the breakfast, including: Saskatchewan Roughriders Wes Cates and Michael Palmer, Winnipeg Blue Bomber Barrin Simpson, Edmonton Eskimo Patrick Kabongo, and BC Lion coach Mark Washington. Players and coaches from the Montreal Alouettes and the Calgary Stampeders were also in attendance. Argonauts’ CEO Michael “Pinball” Clemons, gave an inspiring speech and his wife Diane graced the crowd with heart-felt song. Several players spoke personally to the fans about how their faith in God impacts their lives as athletes.
The AIA Grey Cup Breakfast is organized every year by the host city’s local Athletes in Action chapter. Since 1977, Athletes in Action has had a positive influence on the lives of thousands of people. AIA works with the athletic world from children’s camps to professional locker rooms sharing a message of hope, positive lifestyles and lasting values.
