With 2008 coming to a close, Argonauts.ca looks at some of the highlight-reel moments from the last year in Part 1 of the Top Plays of 2008.
June 27 in Winnipeg:
Jamal Robertson catches a screen pass and takes off 52 yards for the Argos’ first touchdown of the season. In doing so, he leaps a defender and straight arms another on his way to the endzone. Robertson added a rushing touchdown later in the game.
July 3 vs Hamilton:
Defensive back, later safety, Kenny Wheaton crushes Ticats receiver Jason French in the open-field at Rogers Centre – the crowd erupted.
July 10 in Edmonton:
Argonauts leading receiver Arland Bruce III makes a one-handed touchdown catch, while falling down, on pass from Kerry Joseph. He beat two Edmonton defenders on the 17 yard reception.
July 20 vs Edmonton:
The game was in the balance and the offence took the ball on its own 1-yard line. All eyes were on Kerry Joseph who orchestrated an 11-play, 109-yard drive to win the game with no time on the clock. During the drive, Joseph completed 5 passes for 79 yards to rookie Canadian receiver Tyler Scott before plunging into the endzone on a 13-yard run. Argos won 35-31.
In the same game, rookie receiver James Robinson caught 10 passes for 194 yards, including a 90-yard catch-and-run touchdown. His monster game produced the fourth-highest single-game average per catch in team history (19.4). It ranked behind games by Paul Masotti, Manny Hazard and Terry Greer.
July 27 in Saskatchewan:
Second year linebacker Adrian Mayes appeared in his first CFL start and left a lasting impression on Riderville. Mid-way through the first half he charged up a large hole in Saskatchewan’s offensive line and laid a thundering sack on Darian Durant. The hit forced him from the game.
August 1 vs Winnipeg:
Dominique Dorsey scores his first return touchdown of the season, a 94-yard punt return in the first quarter against Winnipeg. It stands as the longest punt return of his career.
August 7 at Hamilton:
QB Reggie McNeal makes CFL regular season debut, but at receiver, and stuns everyone by leading all receivers with 6 catches for 101 yards.
September 1 at Hamilton:
Labour Day Classic 2008 and Arland Bruce shows why he loves to play on the Holiday Monday. The Argos Mr. Everything matches a career-high 10 passes for 149 yards.
Dominique Dorsey turned in his first 100+ yard receiving game. He lit-up the Hamilton defence for an 81-yard catch, the longest reception of his career.
