Mississauga – The Toronto Argonauts Football Club announced today that it has extended veteran DL Ronald Flemons through 2010. Flemons was re-acquired by Toronto in a trade with Saskatchewan on July 7, 2008.
Commented Argos GM/VP, Football Operations, Adam Rita, “We are happy to extend Ron Flemons. He has been a steady player for us and is a great team guy. He can play all the positions on the defensive line which gives him great value. He’s an unselfish young man of solid character and we welcome him back to the Argos.“
Flemons originally joined the Argos as a free agent in March 2006. He played two seasons (2006 & 2007) for Toronto before being dealt to Saskatchewan as part of the trade that brought QB Kerry Joseph to the Argos. He returned to Toronto at the beginning of the 2008 season and appeared in 11 games for the Boatmen. In 2.5 seasons with the club, he has 39 defensive tackles and 7 sacks while backing up an all-star laden defensive line including DE Jonathan Brown and DT Adriano Belli. Flemons is versatile enough to play defensive end or defensive tackle and was even thrust into nose tackle duty in 3-4 formations.
Commented Flemons, “I’m excited to continue my time with the Argos. Last year left a bad taste in my mouth and I can’t wait to help change that. Improvement starts in the off-season – and I started weeks ago – so by the time we get to training camp, we will be ready to become an elite team and get back to the Grey Cup. Winning is a whole lot better than losing, and I expect to win.”
Flemons, along with OT Glenn January, the Argos’ first round selection in the 2008 CFL Canadian Draft (DL Keith Shologan) and an Argos 2010 CFL Canadian Draft pick were sent to Saskatchewan on March 6, 2008 in exchange for Joseph. Flemons’ dressed in both preseason games for the Roughriders but did not see regular season action He was traded back to Toronto on July 7, 2008, along with Saskatchewan’s fifth round pick in the 2011 CFL Canadian Draft. The Argonauts sent WR TJ Acree, the rights to negotiation list player and their third round pick in the CFL Canadian Draft to the Riders.
The Toronto Argonauts also announced today that DS Cory Peoples has re-signed with the club and OG Andrew Greene has been released. Peoples attended 2008 training camp with the Argonauts and was a final cut. Greene signed with the team in September 2008 and dressed in seven games.
