Toronto Argonauts Wide Receiver
It’s January 26th and I’ve just finished my third week of classes at the University of Western Ontario this semester. Having taken a break from school to play football as a rookie for the Toronto Argonauts this past season, it’s hard to get back into the role of student. The routine is different from that of the football player. Instead of 1:30 p.m. practice, it’s 9:00 a.m. classes. Instead of having every evening to relax, it’s grabbing a bite to eat, training and homework. Gone are the days of sleeping in every morning.
I live pretty close to campus, only a 15 minute walk, which will really wake you up in this kind of weather. The winters here in London are none like any I have seen – very cold and lots of snow. The area lives up to its nickname of the “Snow Belt”! After a couple of Geography classes, I grab a sandwich at a great campus eatery called “The Spoke” – the CLT (chicken, lettuce, and tomato) is a favourite. With a couple of hours to kill now before I go and train with the Western football players, I head to the track for a speed workout which includes band resistance and form running. After 45 minutes at the track, I need to relax a bit and there is no better way than playing NBA ’09 on Playstation. It’s 5:30 p.m. now and that means that it is time to go to the weight room. It is upper body day so the strength and conditioning coach for the Mustangs puts us through an exhausting workout concentrating on chest and shoulders. After an hour, it’s time to head home and get some dinner.
Steak, potatoes and corn are on the menu for tonight – and are most nights as I love a good steak. I’m pretty good with the BBQ too, I might add! I live with four other guys from my hometown of Windsor, who are all attending school here – we’ve been friends for many years. We have a little dog named Tank who is a mix of Jack Russell terrier and pug – thus a Jug”, who loves to beg at dinner time.
It’s 8:00 p.m. now so I’ll put my feet up and watch a little TV before starting some homework. “24” is my favourite show so I’m settling down with my “Smart Food” popcorn to watch “Jack” in action!
Finally, an hour or two of homework/ studying before going to bed for the night. Trying to balance training and school is a challenge every year. Just another semester or so and I’ll have my degree. Anyways, I’m completing my education and staying in top physical shape while doing so.
And as for now, it’s all about my goal and that is to bring the Grey Cup back to Toronto. That is what drives me to do what I do in the off season. Only one thing left to do after this long day and that is to hit the sack. Goodnight Toronto.
