It is rare that the entire identity of a unit on a football team changes almost instantaneously. However, with this week’s signing of coveted free agent linemen Rob Murphy and Dominic Picard, the Argos front five is quickly starting to take on a new identity – one that preaches drive, tenacity and aggression.
“These two guys play just like their offensive line coach Ron Heller played during his days. They play to the echo of the whistle”, said Argos Head Coach Bart Andrus.
Heller, who was an aggressive linemen himself for 12 years in the NFL states that the two newest Argos in the trenches fit the mould.
“There are a lot of big, strong, athletic offensive lineman out there but rarely do you find two with the aggression that these two bring to the table”, an elated Heller commented. “I think that is what separates a good lineman from a great lineman, and that is the persona that we want on our offensive line”.
The players themselves, who are no strangers to aggressive play on the football field, feel that their strengths lend themselves perfectly to the attitude that the Toronto coaching staff is trying to create.
“That is why they call me the Angry Frenchman”, joked Picard. “Playing tough gives me that drive and energy; I enjoy playing the game as hard as I can”.
While Picard has earned the reputation of the ‘Angry-Frenchman’, Murphy is known as one of the toughest linemen in the league. He plans to build on the identity that he helped create in B.C. over the last three seasons with fellow tough linemen Jason Jiminez and Sherko Haji-Rasouli.
“I want to provide some veteran leadership and hopefully the mentality and attitude that I bring to the game catches on”, said Murphy. “I did that in B.C. and I am definitely excited about this venture”.
