The Toronto Argonauts Football Club is mourning the loss of Grey Cup Champion and Canadian Football Hall of Famer Frank Morris. He was 85.
A World War II Veteran, Morris began his football career playing for Navy teams in Toronto and Halifax. He entered the CFL ranks in 1945 with the Toronto Argonauts and was a key part of the Argos’ three consecutive Grey Cup wins in 1945, ’46 and ’47. The hard nosed offensive guard and defensive tackle was named to Toronto’s All-Time Modern Era All-Star Team.
Former teammate and current Toronto Argonauts Consultant, Football Operations Nick Volpe commented: “He wasn’t the biggest but he sure was strong and he always gave 100 percent. He was one of the best guards to play for the Boatmen on the field and was an all around great person off the field”.
Morris played a total 44 regular season games and 8 playoff contests in his 5 years with the Boatmen before joining the Edmonton Eskimos in 1950. He would help the Esks to three straight Grey Cup victories (’54, ’55, ’56) during his eight years in an Eskimo uniform.
“Frank’s dedication to the Canadian Football League is obvious when reading through our league’s rich history,” said Mark Cohon, CFL Commissioner. “He was a huge success on and off the field and even on both sides of the ball. He was a true role model for those that had the privilege of watching him play. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and fans from across the country.”
Frank Morris is survived by his wife Dorothy Mae, six children, 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
