Mini-camp Diaries – June 3

Although morning practice was scheduled for 8:30 a.m. the Argos rookies and quarterbacks were on the field and warming up well before their scheduled arrival. Both practices were upbeat and aggressive; players were in helmets and shoulder pads but made contact like it was a real game. Coach Andrus spent most of the day with the offence, specifically the quarterbacks. He carefully watched that players practiced fast and kept the tempo up.

Following the first practice, draft pick OL #68 Zach Pollari and import OT #63 Shannon Boatman stayed after practice to work on their technique together. Kickers Justin Medlock and Eddie Johnson practiced punting after morning practice while the returners got in some work. The two then practiced place kicking in the afternoon.

Argos 2008 draft pick, and Toronto native, DB #39 Matt Black had a strong day of practice. He was all over the field and in on nearly every tackle. He almost picked off a deflected pass during afternoon drills. Also in the afternoon, 2009 draft pick WR #71 Matt Lambros took a short slant from Kerry Joseph and ran up the sidelines and into the endzone. He connected with Joseph again on a deep route and ran uncontested into the endzone. DB #36 Alphonso Hodge had a pick in the afternoon. The defence surrounded him and cheered loudly as he ran it back the other way.

WR #89 Cleannord Saintil and left-handed QB #17 Stephen Reaves stayed behind at second practice to work on timing, passes and routes. The quarterbacks had worked on their sideline passes earlier in practice by throwing into a net.

After morning drills, Kerry Joseph talked to the media about the importance of being a ‘coach’ to the rookie players and helping them through training camp.

Rookies and QBs are back on the field at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow (Thursday) morning and then again at 3:00 p.m. Click here for a complete training camp practice schedule.
