Training Camp Diaries – June 6

Argos mini-camp has concluded, and a sure sign that football season is here happens when veterans report to the club’s practice facility in Mississauga, Ontario.

The day started as a reunion of sorts with DE Jonathan Brown, RB Jeff Johnson, DB Pete Hunter, OG Taylor Robertson, OT Brian Ramsay and LB Kevin Eiben were some of the first to arrive. The mood was nothing but upbeat and the consensus is that these players are itching to get back on the football field Sunday morning.  Perhaps no player was more excited than second-year RB Jamal Robertson who could not wipe the smile from his face saying, “This is what it’s all about. I’m so excited to be back and can’t wait to get going tomorrow”.

As players set up their assigned lockers, many of the veterans met up with rookies who have been at the training facility trying to get up to speed since Wednesday; many of whom will be teammates when the season opener arrives.

Today also marked the annual medicals where players meet with team doctors, trainers and equipment staff to file paper work before practice begins.  Another administrative duty on the day before the first team practice is the headshot session.  Time for players to gel their hair and practice their smile for team pictures, videoboard and television broadcaster video shoots.  So far, it seems like the ‘Best Hair Award’ on photo day goes to sophomore Steve Schmidt who arrived with more hair than he left with last season.

Later tonight, the entire Argos players and coaches meet for the first team-wide meeting before hitting the field for the first day of training camp on Sunday at 8:30 a.m.
