The Argonauts finished their final day of two-a-day practices on a high note on Friday. Two more high-tempo workouts, with a focus on special teams, ended what has been a long two and a half weeks for players, coaches and staff.
Rookie CB Dovonte Edwards, who also handled most of the return duties in Wednesday’s game, had an impressive interception by leaping up into the air and picking off a Cody Pickett pass.
Not to be outdone, Pickett once again displayed a strong and accurate arm by throwing several long passes on target throughout the day. QB Kerry Joseph struck three consecutive times during target practice. In fact, the quarterbacks are getting so good at hitting the net from upwards of 40 yards away that coaches and staff joke the net should dress as a fifth receiver in Tuesday game!
WR/KR Jerome Mathis returned to practice and looked strong with several receptions from both long and short range while returning punts. Meanwhile, gregarious DT Walter Curry showed his will during a conditioning drill by keeping pace at the front of the line with the quarterbacks.
RB Jamal Robertson demonstrated terrific speed driving up the middle past several defenders on three different plays. With final cuts looming next week, the running backs are making it very tough on the coaching staff to choose.
The players had their fun at the end of practice when rookies were sent to the far end of the field to retrieve high and deep balls from the ball toss machine. The balls however, shot out of the machine like Patriot missiles and it was up to the rooks to successfully field one in order to get out of the drill and join the veterans who had formed a ‘receiving line’ of sorts. Import OL Shannon Boatman and non-import OL Gordon Sawler were the last two standing at the end. After watching their ball hawking ability, the Argos are lucky that the two big men are here to move people and not shag kicks.
NOTES: Zeke Moreno would like to congratulate son Lorenzo on his pre-school graduation on Wednesday – he apologizes that he couldn’t be there…The Argos said goodbye to last season’s team Rookie of the Year DB Kenny Heatly as well as LB Derrick Ballard, DE Ronald Jones, RB Jay Lucas, and OL Richard Zulys…The Argos practice at 9:00 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday as they get ready to play in Hamilton for the team’s second pre-season game on Tuesday night.
