It is difficult to decipher whether or not the Argos are catching the Calgary Stampeders at the right moment.
One school of thought is that the Argos have the Stamps right where they want them; 0-2 heading into the third week of the CFL season and having little resemblance to the club that captured the Grey Cup last November. On the other hand, the Stamps may be a team that should be feared; hungry for a win after many predicted that they would be atop the West division out of the gates.
There is no doubt that the Stamps have struggled in their first two games (versus Montreal and Winnipeg respectively) and turnovers have been a big concern for the Calgary offence that has always prided itself on finishing drives by putting 6 points on the board.
Perhaps more frustrating for the Stamps, yet worrisome for the Argos, is that their lack of productivity on offence is clearly not due to a lack of talent. With one of the league’s premier pivots and a formidable receiving corps that includes the likes of Jeremaine Copeland, Ken-Yon Rambo and Nik Lewis, there is no doubt that this team has the ability to turn their slow start around and do it in a hurry.
Then there is the ‘Joffrey Reynolds factor’. The veteran running back has only accumulated 77 total yards on the ground in each of the team’s first two games combined, but Argos defenders would be foolish to think that another 100-yard game is out of the question from a back that has consistently been atop the CFL’s rushing charts over the last four seasons.
