Friday Night Football is back as the Toronto Argonauts, led by quarterback Cody Pickett in his second start of the season, take on Henry Burris and the 2008 Grey Cup Champion Calgary Stampeders at Rogers Centre on August 28 at 7:30 p.m., presented by the CAW.
Friday’s game is also a celebration of amateur sport so be sure to arrive early. Members of Canada’s Olympic team, including freestyle skier and Toronto native Veronika Bauer, a 2 time Olympian and former World Champion, National Bobsleigh Team member Heather Moyse and members of the National Men’s Luge Team Jeff Christie, Ian Cockerline and Sam Edney, will be stationed at Gate 11 from 6:30 – 7:00 p.m. to sign autographs.
The CFL has approved the use of the “2009 Olympic Spirit $25 Sterling Silver Hologram Coin” pressed by the Royal Canadian Mint for the official coin toss. The coin is themed Athletes’ Pride and on one side depicts our Olympians proudly waiving the Canadian flag while the other is emblazoned with ‘Vancouver 2010’ above a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Two Olympians will join the officials and the team captains for the coin toss.
The celebration of amateur sport continues as the Argos have partnered with the Ontario Football Alliance (OFA) to support and recognize minor football in Ontario. Proceeds from the 50/50 draw will support the OFA’s minor football programs. Minor football players will participate in the fan tunnel for player introductions and scrimmage on the field during pre-game as part of the Timbits Minor Football Program. The Oshawa Hawkeyes, former team of Argo LB Jason Pottinger, will be honoured for their 50th Anniversary.
Another reason to arrive early is a special silent auction beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Gate 9A to benefit The Argos Foundation. Fans can bid on a pair of tickets to watch the September 11 game from Michael “Pinball” Clemons’ private suite, a spot in the Jr. Cheer program, autographed memorabilia and more.
Other highlights include Jasmine Richards from the Family Channel singing the National Anthem and halftime will feature the popular Jr. Cheer program where the youngest fans can dance and cheer on the field at the game. Families living with allergies to peanuts/nuts can now take advantage of a peanut/nut reduced suite available at every Argos home game. More information can be found at argonauts.ca.
After the game, fans are invited to head over to the Official Post-Game Party at Jack Astor’s, 144 Front Street West, to say hi to some of your favourite Argos players and the 2009 Argos Cheerleaders, presented by the Toronto Sun.
