Mississauga – The Toronto Argonauts Football Club announced today that import RB Jarrett Payton requested and was granted his release from the team.
Payton commented, “This decision hasn’t been easy, but most decisions in life aren’t. It’s one that required careful thought and, in the end, I needed to take care of family first. I don’t see this as an end as much as a new beginning for me and my family. I still have a true love for football – that will never go away. I needed to move on from here. The Argos are a great organization with a great group of players and coaches. They have all the pieces here to be successful but it will take time. If everyone is patient then I know good things will happen and I wish the team the very best of luck for the rest of the season.”
Payton, who joined the Argonauts during 2009 training camp, dressed in eight games making three starts. In those games, he carried 3 times for 10 yards, caught 7 passes for 37 yards, returned 1 kickoff for 13 yards, tried 1 kickoff for 55 yards and attempted a convert.
The son of Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Walter Payton, he played the 2007 season with the Montreal Alouettes were he led the club in rushing yards and touchdowns. He also dressed for the 2005 World Bowl champion Amsterdam Admirals and spent time with the Tennessee Titans after a standout college career with the University of Miami Hurricanes.
