The Toronto Argonauts are saddened to learn that former LB Ray Nettles has passed away at a hospice in Jacksonville, Florida. Nettles turned 60 years old on August 1st before succumbing to a long battle with cancer Tuesday afternoon.
Nettles joined the Argonauts in 1977, via trade from the B.C. Lions, and made an immediate impact. He earned East Division All-Star honours at linebacker and was named the club’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player.
The following season, Nettles was traded to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats before finishing his career with the Ottawa Renegades and Calgary Stampeders. In 2005, Nettles was inducted into the Canadian Fotoball Hall of Fame.
The product of the University of Tennessee was drafted in the 6th round of the 1972 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins. He chose to play in the CFL and started his career with the B.C. Lions in 1972. While in B.C., he was the West Division Most Outstanding Rookie, B.C. Lions’ most outstanding rookie, All-Western Linebacker in 1972, 1973, 1974, Schenley Most Outstanding Lineman in 1973, Western Conference Most Outstanding Lineman in 1972 and the B.C. Lions’ Most Outstanding defensive player in 1972,1973.
