Head 2 Head: Carter/stamps

He has only played in five contests with the Boatmen but Jason Carter is making an impact in the Argos’ receiving corps.  Undoubtedly their most consistent receiver since signing with the club September 1, the Texas A&M product finished just 6 yards short of a 100-yard game in his CFL debut versus Hamilton in Week 10 and has racked up 25 receptions for 308 yards so far this season.

In fact, had Carter played for the entire season, he would be on pace to pull within striking distance of Stamps for the league lead in receiving yards, finishing with 1,108.

There is not a defensive back in the league that would admit to not knowing who Fred Stamps is.  The third-year Edmonton Eskimo sits atop the entire CFL in receiving 1,033 yards and 7 touchdowns on 64 receptions.  He is also in a tie for third in the league in touchdowns scored and his receiving numbers eclipse that of his Western Division counterparts Jermaine Copeland (CGY) and Geroy Simon (B.C.) who round out the nation’s top three.

Averaging 16.1 yards per catch, Stamps has shown improvement in each of his three CFL seasons, making his mark in 2008 after being used sparingly in 2007.  He finished just 249 yards short of 1,000 last season and is poised to improve on what has been a career season. He is on pace to record 1,328 yards and 9 touchdowns by the time the regular season comes to a close.

In an offence that spent so many years focusing on now-retired Jason Tucker and Ed Hervey, Stamps, along with newcomers Maurice Mann and Canadian Kamau Peterson, have rounded out a receiving corps that offers multiple weapons in which QB Ricky Ray can look to late in games.
