It is rare that a team comes off a loss and all they do is generate positive headlines. Somehow, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats have been able to do just that. Coming off a 41-38 shootout loss to the Montreal Alouettes, Tiger-Cats’ quarterback Kevin Glenn solidified himself as the undisputed starting quarterback, earning Offensive Player of the Week honours despite dropping the contest.
Glenn, who along with Quinton Porter, turned in a sub-par performance at home to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers the week before, shredded the Alouettes secondary for 506 yards in the air and completed just under 66% of his passes to go along with three touchdown passes.
A large part of Glenn’s success has come about as his receiving corps starts to gel. Veteran slotback, and former, Argo Arland Bruce lll, along with Canadians Dave Stala, Chris Bauman and newcomer Marquay McDaniel have created a dangerous unit for opposing defences, despite the absence of their leading receiver from 2008 in Prechae Rodriguez.
In addition, mixing in a solid running game with rookie RB DeAndra’ Cobb has allowed Marcel Bellefeuille and his staff to orchestrate a relatively balanced offensive attack.
Defensively, the Tiger-Cats, especially in their secondary, have a new identity – one that is far from the one that had challenges stopping even the league’s weakest offences in previous years. Led by defensive halfbacks Jeff Tisdale and Chris Thompson, the Ticats have been able to not only limit more big plays than in previous years, but make bigger plays than a Hamilton defence has in quite some time.
The ‘Cats are currently fighting for the chance to host a playoff game and a win this week against their biggest rival could go a long way in creating separation between themselves and the Bombers for second place in the East.
