They are the envy of the Canadian Football League, but if Montreal had it their way, they would fast forward through the remaining games on their schedule from the time they clinched the East division to the time that they actually have to play the big game.
The Als officially locked down top spot in the East Division weeks ago and since then have been walking the fine line that many first place teams walk heading into the final weeks of the regular season. With a bye week already in place, how often, if at all, do you play your starters?
A minor injury to QB Anthony Calvillo solved that question temporarily a few weeks back at the most important position on the football field, but he is healthy now and the debate as to whether or not to sit him or keep him sharp and risk injury roars on.
If head coach Marc Trestman does indeed to sit out some of his marquee playmakers then he will be looking to some of his reserves to pick up the slack. No player will be looked upon more than QB Adrian McPherson, who has fared very well when called upon. The Florida State product made his first career CFL start two weeks back against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, completing 20 of 35 passes for 232 yards and 1 touchdown.
McPherson’s forte however, may be his ability to bring forth a running threat to the Alouettes’ offence. Perhaps the most creative and productive short yardage pivot in the league, McPherson has carried the ball 55 times for 296 yards and two touchdowns in 2009. Not disappointing numbers by any stretch considering the limitation in snaps taken this season.
