Upon graduating from Sheridan College’s Broadcast Journalism program, my ambition for an internship was solely to get into a situation that was sports-oriented. Through one of my classes, I was able to get a contact from my intern supervisor of a possible internship opening with the Toronto Argonauts. The next day, I sent them an email, and about a week later I got a call back for an interview. The interview went well and I was able to secure a position as a Video Intern.
My internship began in early June with training camp. Before I even started filming, my video coordinating supervisor told me that preparation, mental focus, and being a stickler for detail would be my keys to success throughout the season. Needless to say the two weeks of filming two-a-day practices that each lasted over two hours was difficult and it was like nothing I had ever experienced before – in other words, it wasn’t easy. The amount of detail and concentration in filming practices is crucial in order to get the best possible footage so the coaching staff is able to evaluate the players to the best of their capabilities. In the beginning, my filming was shaky, but my video supervisors were great instructors and were extremely patient throughout my learning process. After a few more weeks of filming, I was able to shoot perfect practices.
This is why I love working with Argos. I’m fortunate to be working in a department with a bunch of great people who instill great character and work ethic. I’ve learned things here that go way beyond any classroom lecture, and I’m also able to take what I’ve learned here with the Argos and apply it to everyday life. The internship filled both my loves – camera work and football and I am a better camera operator and person from the experience.
