A dark cloud was cast over early practice when promising young draft pick Steven Turner collapsed to the turf with a torn left Achilles tendon. Turner will undergo surgery on Friday. The entire situation was eerily similar to 2008 when former Argos RB Tyler Ebell suffered the same injury in training camp. We all wish Steven a quick recovery.
In today’s practice, the quarterbacks lit up the sky with an air show that rivaled any put on by the Snowbirds. #1 Cleo Lemon, #14 Ken Dorsey and #12 Dalton Bell all fired balls downfield with surprising ease. Receivers like #80 Jeremaine Copeland, #83 Brandon Rideau, #87 Gerran Walker and #19 Jeff Webb all made spectacular plays on deeply thrown balls. Copeland made a one-handed catch during warm-ups that caused teammate WR #84 Chad Lucas to repeatedly call out, “Don’t show off Cope!” The nearby fans shared a laugh.
Canadian receiver #88 Mike Bradwell started practice off with a bang when Lemon put up a deep ball that started to trail and came down a little short. Bradwell cut his route short, charged back to the ball and dove over DB #28 Byron Parker, who was in coverage, to make a great play.
#54 OL Chris Van Zeyl has been getting significant time at right tackle during camp. He’s replacing Brian Ramsay whose knee (which was injured near the end of the 2009) is keeping him out of 12 on 12 drills. Van Zeyl finished 2009 as the starting right tackle and showed great improvement with each game.
New Argos DB #7 Dwaine Carpenter attended his first team practice today. He saw few reps but his time in the lineup is expected to increase as camp goes on. DB #11 Delroy Clarke and DB #27 Sammy Joseph both put themselves in great position to intercept passes today but narrowly missed the picks.
The Double Blue take the field at Huron Park on Tuesday morning from 8:00 a.m. until approx. 11:30 a.m. All practices are open to the public.
