MISSISSAUGA – It has been a long wait but Jamie Boreham is finally starting to kick again. Boreham, who was acquired in a draft day trade in May, had yet to boot a ball either in a game or practice since Week 13 of the 2009 season with Saskatchewan. On Tuesday morning, he finally hit the practice field.
“It’s about time, I think. I have been hanging out here doing a whole lot of not too much,” the veteran punter said with a grin on his face.
Although he was sporting a smile, Boreham also seemed to have a look of relief on his face when he met with reporters Tuesday after patiently waiting for doctor’s clearance to get back on the field.
The Manitoba product was hoping to be back on the field far before even becoming an Argo. He tried to get clearance to play with Saskatchewan in last year’s Grey Cup but the news he was wishing for never came.
Now, an off-season has passed and a change of jerseys has occurred, and Boreham is just thankful that his new team has been as patient as he has with his injury.
“I really appreciate the Argos for going about everything in a professional manner,” Boreham explained. “They were looking out for my best interests and making sure everything was okay. I have nothing but praise for them that way.”
Boreham has been one of the more consistent and uncharacteristically physical punters in the league for six CFL seasons. He began his career as a placekicker with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, converting 71 of 105 field goal attempts in his first three seasons.
His arrival in Saskatchewan, however, saw his role change as he focused primarily on punting with Rider kicker Luca Congi handling the field goal kicking.
Argos’ head coach Jim Barker said he is undecided, at this point, as to whether or not Boreham will play in the team’s season-opener in Calgary next week. Despite the coach’s words, the punter’s excitement about being back on the football field is clear.
“I was ready (for Calgary) yesterday,” he said with a chuckle. “I feel great. I am going to do my best to help out Grant (Shaw) and, as a team, we will do our best to try and help this team get some w’s.”
