TORONTO — Everyone was expecting new things from a Winnipeg Blue Bombers squad that went through their fair share of changes in the off-season. Nobody expected the kind of production that new quarterback Buck Pierce and company put out last Friday night versus the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
A 30-point trouncing of the ‘Cats surprised even the experts. What didn’t surprise was the performance by veteran receiver Terrence Edwards. The man that many call ‘Mini-Milt’ racked up a career-high 191 yards receiving and two touchdowns on only 5 catches. He re-affirmed himself as the leader of the Bombers’ receiving corps after a disappointing and injury-plagued 2009 campaign.
This week, Edwards and the rest of the Winnipeg offence will go up against a new attack-first Argos secondary; one that forced four turnovers last week against the Calgary Stampeders (three by fumble and one by interception). Despite what the Argos secondary does against the Bomber receivers, the front seven will have to focus on containing RB Fred Reid who put up a solid 98 yards in his first game of 2010. Reid, however, struggled last year against the Boatmen rushing for only 119 yards and no touchdowns in three contests.
Reid quietly racked up his totals last week, primarily due to the spotlight that was on newly acquired quarterback Pierce. The former B.C. Lion passed for 291 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for an additional 89 yards and a major.
