TORONTO – In September, the Toronto Argonauts Football Club announced the second year of a multi-faceted mentorship and funding program entitled Level The Playing Field, sponsored by Tim Hortons, in partnership with The Argos Foundation, the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) and the Toronto Foundation for Student Success. The program helped return football teams return to three Toronto-area high schools and revitalize ten other football programs. Through a $10,000 donation to each school, Downsview Secondary School, Sir Robert L. Borden B.T.I. and Thistletown Collegiate Institute are each fielding a football team this fall, after many years of not having teams. In all, TDSB high school football will receive $80,000 in funding in the 2010 season through Level The Playing Field. The new high school football teams all play in the TDSB Varsity Development Tier 2 League. In an effort to help build and promote high school football, the Argos will send out weekly updates on the teams in this league throughout the high school football season.
The coaches from each team in the Varsity Development League were invited to submit their team’s MVP based on both on-field and off-field performance. Here are the team MVPs for the week ending October 1:
Westview Centennial S.S.
MVP: Sean Sheppard

“Sean Sheppard led the Westview Wildcat team with his outstanding leadership and play. Sean threw for one touchdown and ran for over 160 yards scoring 5 touchdowns.”

“Ashton is competing in his first year of Football. He is a keen competitor who gives his all on every play. An excellent team leader, Ashton scored 3 touchdowns in his first game.”

“In Downsview Secondary School’s first win in over 20 years, Nathaniel rushed for 4 touchdowns, almost 200 yards and 100 yards returning. He is also a team leader both on and off the field.”
