Mississauga – For the second consecutive month, dynamic Argos’ WR/KR Chad Owens has been named CFL Special Teams Player of the Month. Owens has already set a club record for being named CFL Player of the Week six-times (weeks 2, 7, 12, 14, 17 and 18), and is now a two-time CFL Special Teams Player of the Month (September & October) in 2010. He was a unanimous selection for this month’s award.
In five (5) games during October, Owens shredded opposing special teams coverage units. He accounted for 1,090 total kick return yards and scored a 109-yard missed field goal return touchdown against Winnipeg. Here’s how his incredible month breaks down:
Owens’ Outstanding October:
30 punt returns for 434 yards, 14.5 AVG.
18 kickoff returns for 459 yards, 25.5 AVG.
3 missed field goal returns for 197 yards, 1 TD, 65.7 AVG.
Also in October, the Fly’n Hawaiian became just the fifth player in CFL history to record 1,000 punt and kickoff return yards in a season, captured the CFL kick return title leading the league in punt (1,060), kickoff (1,216), and missed field goal return (425) yards, and tied for the CFL lead with four total kick return touchdowns on the season (4). He completed his dream campaign by posting the second-most total kick return yards in a single-season in CFL history (2,701 yards on kickoff, punt and missed field goal returns), and led the league with 3,288 combined yards, more than 1,000 yards ahead of the next closest player (Marcus Thigpen, 2,190).
Owens will make his CFL playoffs debut this weekend as he and his teammates head into boisterous Ivor Wynne Stadium this Sunday, November 14 to take on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the Eastern Semi-Final; kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET.
