MISSISSAUGA – The top 50 Canadian prospects in football will descend upon Toronto this weekend and the Toronto Argonauts Football Club is pleased to officially introduce Ted Goveia as its new Director, Canadian Scouting. Goveia has worked and coached at all levels of football in Canada for more than 20 years.
Commented Argonauts GM & Head Coach, Jim Barker, “Ted brings us experience as both a junior and CIS football coach, and he is exactly the type of person I want to head our Canadian scouting. He worked as a member of our coaching staff last season and learned about the kinds of players our coaches are looking for on both sides of the ball. Ted knows what it takes for a Canadian player to excel here and will use his impressive list of contacts to help find the players that will best fit our needs.”
Ted Goveia has a long resume full of Canadian coaching and football recruitment experience. He’s held positions at the University of British Columbia, McMaster University, Mount Allison University and he spent 2010 coaching the Toronto Argonauts’ running backs. He’s also held fulltime coaching positions in the CJFL, at the high school level and gained extensive experience as a guest coach in the CFL. All told, Goveia has been part of every level of football in Canada.
Commented Goveia, “Last year was a great learning opportunity for me as a member of the Argonauts coaching staff. I was able to learn the organization’s vision and become familiar with the players, and now I’m really excited to take on an expanded role within the team. I’m thrilled, once again, to work closely with the CIS and junior football programs across the country as we continue to build a winning team here, in Toronto.”
A former offensive lineman from 1991-93 for the Mt. Allison Mounties, Goveia has held coaching positions in the CJFL with the Burlington Braves and Oakville Longhorns. In Burlington, he was head coach and led the club to three provincial finals. He also coached at Assumption High School in Burlington where he once attended and played football. Goveia was a guest coach at Toronto Argonauts training camp each year from 2001-08.
Goveia will join Argonauts scouts, personnel staff and coaches at this weekend’s CFL Evaluation Camp held in downtown Toronto. During the two day event the top 50 Canadian prospects in football will be put through rigorous physical and mental testing. Testing will occur at the Park Hyatt on Bloor Street on Saturday, March 5 and under the bubble at Varsity Stadium on Sunday, March 5. Additional details are available at cfl.ca.
