TORONTO – Can a team of professional football players beat some of the Toronto District School Board’s finest basketball-playing staff? The Courtside Boatmen, the charity basketball team composed of current Argonaut players, will take on Director of Education Chris Spence, former Eastern Commerce star point guard and current special needs assistant Collin Charles and a number of other TDSB superintendents, principals and teachers in a charity basketball game this Friday at CW Jefferys Collegiate Institute to benefit the Toronto Foundation for Student Success and The Argos Foundation.
The Argos Foundation’s many initiatives include the award-winning in-school Huddle Up Bullying Prevention program and the Level The Playing Field program, which has returned football teams to seven TDSB schools in the past two seasons. Players on the Courtside Boatmen include: Jeremaine Copeland, Byron Parker, Tristan Black, Mike Bradwell, Jordan Younger, Andre Durie, Chad Rempel, Reggie McNeal, Chris VanZeyl, Rob Murphy and Noel Prefontaine.
Throughout the school year, the All-Stars play one game each month against teams of teachers, administration and other staff at schools throughout the TDSB. It’s all meant to raise awareness of the issue of child poverty – one of the key barriers to learning. With the belief that every student deserves an equitable chance at success, the All-Stars reinforce the idea that poverty does not have to equal failure in Toronto’s schools. So far this year, Hoops4Hope host schools have raised more than $3,150 for the TFSS and school-based anti-bullying initiatives.
“Hoops4Hope is all about inspiring our students to succeed at school, and in life, despite any socioeconomic barriers they may face,” said Chris Spence, Director of Education for the Toronto District School Board. “By reinforcing the idea that poverty does not equal failure, we’re helping to make our city a better place for all Torontonians. The Toronto Argonauts’ ongoing support is indicative of their commitment to the youth of Toronto.”
