MISSISSAUGA — What a difference a year can make.
On June 22, 2010, Argos WR/KR Chad Owens found himself on the Montreal Alouettes’ practice roster, wondering when he would get his shot in the CFL. Then the call came from the Toronto Argonauts.
“I remember it like it was yesterday,” said Owens. “I was so excited because I knew I would be getting an opportunity with Toronto.”

“It was a whirlwind first week here for me,” said the Hawaii native. “And now it’s come full circle.”
The CFL’s schedule makers must have been thinking of Owens’ terrific debut when they drew up the 2011 opening day weekend. The Argos will, again, start on the road in Calgary on Canada Day, exactly 365 days later.
For Owens, all he can hope for is a repeat performance with a little extra added on.
“It was a dream start for me and I would love to have it happen again. But this time I want it to come with a win for the Argonauts.”
Based on his performance last season, leading the CFL in return yards with a staggering 2,701, Owens garnered plenty of attention south of the border. He resisted temptation and chose to finish what he started in Toronto.
“When I look back at last season, all I can think of are the good times and how much fun I had with all these guys.” Owens reflected.
“These are the guys, and this is the city, that I want to win a championship with. That’s why I came back.”
It is hard to believe that a talent such as Owens was acquired by the Argos for a fourth round selection in the 2011 Canadian CFL Draft. General Manager & Head Coach Jim Barker knows that this team would not be the same without the Flyin’ Hawiian.
“He does it all,” said Barker. “Not only is he an unbelievable talent on the field, but his practice ethics are impeccable and he’s just a great person. We are definitely not the same team without him.”
Owens and his teammates will start their season on July 1 in Calgary. You can catch the game, along with other Argos fans, at Jack Astor’s on John St. on Friday night for the team’s away game viewing party. It’s a free event and no tickets are required. Kickoff is at 9:00 p.m. ET.
