MISSISSAUGA – Coming off a mistake-filled loss, the Argos may have left Winnipeg with more than just their first defeat of the early season.
Already without LB Jason Pottinger, who will undergo knee surgery in a few weeks to repair an ACL-related injury, for the season, the Boatmen took to the practice field today without RB Cory Boyd or LB Kevin Eiben. Then second-year CB Sean Smalls left early after sustaining what may be a shoulder injury.
Boyd went down in the first half of Friday’s game but returned a few drives later. His production was clearly hampered, however, rushing only seven times for 14 yards.
“He has his MRI later this afternoon so we will know more then. We are guessing two or three weeks – it’s hard to tell,” Barker said of Boyd’s prognosis.
CFL rookie Chad Kackert will likely take Boyd’s spot if he misses any time. The New Hampshire product was a standout in pre-season last month, racking up 150 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries in two games at tailback.
Although a true timetable has not been put on Boyd’s return, Eiben’s injury seems to be a little less serious at this point. Barker wouldn’t say much but mentioned that the veteran outside linebacker is “short term” with a suspected calf injury.
It is not all bad news on the injury front as it seems like QB Steven Jyles in making strides in his rehab.
“He actually wore shoulder pads today so he is coming along. He might be two weeks away from throwing drills,” Barker explained.
